With an ever-increasing number of house conversions, it is not uncommon for developers to cut corners with cheap and substandard building materials. The end result is an alarmingly large number of properties lacking proper insulation or damp-proofing.

As a homeowner or buyer, this should be a significant concern for you. Poorly built and maintained homes can be prone to rising damp and condensation which often has an impact on a property’s value and viability as a healthy dwelling. Giving Back to the Community

As a growing business firmly embedded in the fabric of Richmond-upon-Thames, it is very important to us that we are always giving back to the communities we have been fortunate enough to work with. We achieve this with multiple giving streams, and are always looking for new opportunities in this area.

Since our first day of trading, we have donated to The Honeypot Children’s Charity whose mission is to support young carers in the community with fun days and summer camps. More information about their work can be found at Honeypot, and we are proud to support their important efforts.

Much like most of our staff, our Managing Director, Austin Sharp, began his career as an apprentice. As such, we recognise the importance of apprenticeships in career development and are supporting a number of apprentices through the early stages of their careers. The COVID-19 pandemic has also been a stark reminder of the hidden heroes who live and work in our community. Tips On Finding The Right Plumber

As important as having urgent plumbing work done on time is finding the right plumber. Experience, qualifications, and specialities should all be given consideration. Failing to do so may lead to unforeseen circumstances and consequences such as the problem which initially required a plumber not being adequately fixed, further damage being done to your water and gas systems, and warrantees being invalidated. Nevertheless, finding the right plumber does not need to be a difficult process, and we would be happy to advise on how you can go about achieving this.

At a most basic level, it is very important that your plumber is either properly qualified, or an apprentice working under supervision. A good starting point for qualifications is a Level 2 National Vocational Qualification. This is equivalent to A-Level standard, and qualifies a plumber to undertake most types of work in a domestic setting. This is the most basic qualification British plumbers tend to hold, but many will also hold a Level 3 NVQ.

Some plumbers are also members of The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering. Membership is only granted if evidence of core competencies can be provided, meaning that this can be a highly effective benchmark of professionalism. Institute members are often kept fully abreast of latest industry developments, and can provide the level of expertise you are looking for. However, many competent plumbers do not go on to join CIPHE or other similar professional organisations. Not doing so does not automatically detract from their level of skill, and this is only one factor to consider.

Why You should Have A Plumbing Inspection Before Buying A Home

If you are in the process of buying a home, then congratulations! This is a momentous and exciting life occasion we wish you the best of luck and success in. As you will know by now, buying a home – be it a flat or a house – can be a complex and time-consuming procedure. From working with a mortgage advisor, conveyancer, or solicitor, there are any number of tasks you must complete before exchanging and moving into your new home. One of these should always be having a plumbing inspection. This is simply good practice, and can lead to significant financial savings in the longer term if properly carried out.

For a moment, consider all the thought and attention to detail that goes into a house or flat viewing. You will likely spend considerable amounts of time inspecting kitchen surfaces, flooring, paintwork, and room sizings and dimensions. If you do not like something, then you will either find a way to change it in a way that suits your tastes, or discount the property as a whole. If wallpaper or carpets can make or break a property deal when they are so superficial, how much more important are the systems that provide you with running water and keep you warm?

The condition a house’s plumbing is in can impact its value, and it is not unheard of for unscrupulous sellers to lie about this to inflate the value of their property. This is particularly common when plumbing systems are in a very poor condition, and repairs would be expensive for the next owner.

By having a plumbing inspection before buying a home, you will be able to partially validate whether it is being sold at an accurate price, as well as whether or not you will have to undertake any works on it if you decide to make a purchase. This may also have duty of care implications if you are buying to let to commercial tenants.

Having a plumbing inspection does not need to be a difficult process. It will be carried out by a qualified plumber who will provide you with a full report about your potential property’s plumbing that goes into far more detail than a usual builder’s report. This will also include a cost analysis of any potential repairs, but these will often be covered by the seller’s insurance meaning you do not need to pay for them yourself.

What Are The Benefits Of Getting A Powerflush?

Powerflushes are one of the most common plumbing procedures our tradespeople carry out. While powerflushes may initially seem significant or even intimidating, this is not the case. They are in fact a very routine and usually straightforward procedure that should be no cause for concern. We are very experienced in powerflushing and will be able to resolve this for you in no time at all.

Over time, central heating systems and components often become clogged and obstructed by various forms of dirty, debris, and rust. As central heating systems require the ability to have clear circulation, blockages and obstructions can often undermine their efficacy. Signs of blockages and obstructions may include leaking pipes, foul-smelling water being released from radiators during bleedings, noisy boilers, radiator cold spots, and ultimately boiler failure. If these signs are observed, then your central heating system would likely benefit from a professional powerflush.

Powerflushing is the fastest and most effective way to unblock a heating system. It entails connecting a special pump to your heating system, then flushing a specially formulated chemical blend through your pipes. This has the effect of removing rust, destroying limescale, and safeguarding against internal rusting. Once this has been achieved, clean water will be pumped through the piping to ensure that contaminated liquid is properly removed.

Powerflushing rarely takes longer than a day in most properties, but duration is usually dependent on how big they are and the size of their central heating system. As a general rule, the smaller the property, the faster the powerflushing. Powerflushing should only ever be conducted by a properly qualified engineer. It entails using potentially dangerous chemicals, may cause lasting damage to your central heating if you make a mistake, as well as potentially invalidating any manufacturer’s warrantee.

There are multiple benefits to powerflushing your central heating. The most obvious is that efficiency will improve, allowing your property to be heated more effectively and at lower cost. Powerflushing is also an important part of central heating maintenance and can play an important role in prolonging your heating system’s lifespan. Last week, WeFIX attended an online job fair for Service leavers and veterans organised by RAJA, the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Association Job Agency. Other organisations represented including Veolia, Serco, and The UK Atomic Energy Authority.

The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) are the British Army’s premier pool of technical and engineering experts, and RAJA supports their personnel in finding sustainable employment post-military service.

Landlord Gas Safety: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

As a landlord, you have a duty to protect the property as well as the tenants living in it at any given time. While there are many factors to consider, the gas safety elements are probably your greatest responsibility. After all, you can never be too careful when dealing with gas appliances.

The Good

UK laws regarding rental properties are very clear, and there are ultimately three areas that every landlord should concentrate on. These are;

Maintenance: The covers appliances, pipework, flues, and chimneys. All appliances should be serviced annually – unless stated otherwise in the manufacturer’s

guide. However, you are not responsible for appliances owned by the tenants.

Gas Safety: Gas safety checks must be conducted annually and can take place between 10-12 months. It’s imperative that they are carried out by a fully qualified Gas Safety engineer. Again, you are not held responsible for tenant-owned appliances.

Record: Certificates should be provided to new tenants when they start their agreements and existing tenants with 28 days of the safety check taking place. Documents should be stored for two years.

Furthermore, since replacing CORGI in 2009, the Gas Safe Register makes every aspect a lot clearer for everyone involved – not least you, the landlord.

The Bad

It’s very easy to forget about the gas safety, especially when you don’t live in the property. Moreover, it can be difficult for you to notice the problems, meaning you’ll have to rely on the tenants to make them known. In addition to annual checks, you should always provide carbon monoxide monitors.

Gas safety can be an expensive job if you choose the wrong type of service too, not least if the engineer doesn’t boast the skills or experience needed to do the job well. While a friend or acquaintance may think they know what they’re doing, taking this route is never advised.

Worse still, problems that stem from the gas appliances and pipework can (if left untreated) escalate into something worse and even affect other parts of the property. Addressing your responsibilities with the help of a Gas Safety Registered engineer is the only solution.

The Ugly

Gas safety is an incredibly important aspect for any property, and not only because there are legal obligations. In August 2018, a landlord escaped jail over inadequate gas safety. However, many landlords have faced fines and worse repercussions due to mistakes in this field.

At What Point Should You Change Your Boiler?

Your boiler is the beating heart of your home’s heating and your most important line of defence when winter sets in. As unpalatable as it may seem, we’ve had our allocated dose of British sunshine, and now it’s time to prepare for the colder months. While we wave goodbye to the last vestiges of summer, many of us will be keeping our windows and doors shut, creeping up into the loft to check the state of our insulation and bleeding our radiators. Yet, although these are important and sensible things to check on as we approach October, they will amount to little if you don’t address the most important part of your home’s heating apparatus.

We all know that the boiler is a complicated and delicate machine and as such many of us give it a wide berth, simply entrusting it to do its job without any intervention on our part. If we’re particularly well organised we may even get it serviced once a year but we still interact with it as little as possible. Still, if we don’t know the signs of an ailing boiler, the consequences for our homes could be dire…

What happens if you don’t know the signs?

If you fail to spot the signs that your boiler may be on its way out, it could present a hazard not only to your home but to your wellbeing. Failing boilers can develop water leaks, leak potentially harmful natural gas into the home or (in some rare cases) even explode. To ensure a warm and safe home, you should check your boiler every year for signs that it may need to be replaced.


If your boiler is 15 years old or over, it’s seriously recommended that you replace it. Older boilers can develop faults and cracks in the pipework which can prove disastrous to your home or at the very least impede its efficacy. Loss of water pressure caused by leaks from aged and eroded components can make your boiler expensive and inefficient, costing you more money the longer you leave it.

Pilot light burning the wrong colour

Your boiler’s pilot light should burn a healthy blue. But if the visible flame inside is instead yellow, this may signify that your boiler is on its way out. A blue flame indicates complete combustion while a yellow or red flame demonstrates that the boiler is not getting enough air for proper combustion. If left unattended this can lead to excessive soot buildup and smoke which can render your boiler unsafe.  

Strange noises or smells

Strange smells emitting from your boiler can also point to improper combustion and the possibility of an internal blockage impeding the healthy blue flame you should be looking for. On the other hand, groaning, knocking or banging noises can imply that your boiler is no longer fit for purpose.

Noticeable loss of heat

Finally, and perhaps most obviously, if you’ve begun to notice that your boiler is taking longer than in previous years to heat your home or your home gets less hot with each passing year, it may be that your boiler needs to be replaced.

To be approved by various official bodies or even business groups, you will often need to have an NVQ Level 2 in England and Wales and an SVQ Level 3 in Scotland, although there are other acceptable qualifications too.

An NVQ Level 2 includes a work placement and guided learning. To find a place on a course, you’ll need to take a test to show how good you are with numbers and your scientific ability too. NVQ Level 2 courses include diplomas in Plumbing and Heating, and Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems.

To pass the course, you’ll have to complete assessments and exams. You also need to submit a portfolio of work and complete workplace assessments.

An NVQ Level 3 can take three years to complete. It’s a good choice if you already have some skills, knowledge and experience. It gives you several options for specialising, with six different pathways available.

Plumbing Apprenticeships

It’s extremely common to do an apprenticeship when you’re training to become a plumber. The best way to learn is to get on the job experience, and you can work towards your qualifications at the same time.

If you want to complete a plumbing apprenticeship, it’s a good idea to look online to see what’s available in your area.

Some colleges offer apprenticeships by partnering with local employers to offer you education and work experience. You might want to take a look at your local council’s website, and you can also find apprenticeships on the Government website. Job websites are also good places to find available positions and find out how you can apply for them.

Apprenticeships are available at different levels and can go all the way up to a Master’s degree. However, a plumbing apprenticeship is likely to be a lower level, although you might want to look into the degree options that are available.

To become an apprentice, you will usually require a certain number of GCSEs, often including Maths and English and grade D or above. You will work with a qualified plumber who will show you the ropes and either spend some of your days (or half days) at college, or attend college in the evenings.

Glossy surfaces and appliances can get a little tacky, and they’re a little impractical considering the amount of cleaning you need to do to make them look great all the time. Instead, people are now switching to matte surfaces that, while they don’t necessarily reflect light as much, look much more natural, hide fingerprints and dirt for a better appearance, and are ultimately easier to manage while still looking amazing.

In 2018, we saw a lot of neutral colour palettes and design schemes that focused on creating light and bright atmospheres. However, as we move closer to 2019 (and also towards winter) trends are starting to shift towards darker tones. Not only does it add a classy touch to your home, but it goes well with the concept of matte textures.

Dark colours are ultimately easier to manage and there’s a lot more experimentation with dark tones as opposed to the bright palettes we’ve seen this year.

Overlapping Functions

Due to rising house prices and increased demand for studio and single-bedroom housing, more and more people are finding themselves in small and cramped apartments. However, this doesn’t mean you need to settle for those boring and tired designs that the landlord has given you. Check the boiler:

None of the additional steps will work to their full potential if the boiler isn’t in good health. Insulate hot water pipes:

What To Do If Pipes Freeze

How To Know

There are some telltale signs that your pipes have frozen. These can include the following:

  • If you turn your taps on and nothing comes out
  • Lack of running water
  • Frost on the pipe
  • Freezing temperature

Remember, your pipe cannot be frozen if it is not cold enough outside to freeze. So before you assume that your pipe is frozen, you might want to check this. These are four of the signs that your pipes might be frozen, so these are what you want to be looking out for. Once you have determined that they are frozen, you need to know what to do if pipes freeze.

What To Do?

There are three steps that you need to take when your pipes have frozen.

  1. Find the stop valve and turn it off
  2. Open all the cold taps, not the hot ones
  3. Call a registered plumber

You should never turn on the hot taps if your pipes are frozen. You might think that this is a good idea because heat melts cold. But, if you do this, your hot water cylinder may collapse if the pipes that are leading to it have been frozen. For this reason, it is always the best option to only open your hot taps.

How long does it take?

It depends on the size of the project. Usually the collaboration on the design process, where we work together to design your dream kitchen takes 2-3 weeks. It usually takes 4-6 weeks for the materials to be ordered and delivered, 1 week to remove / demolish old materials, and 4-6 weeks for installation and finishing touches.

What if I’m not sure what I want?

Some customers come to us with a specific idea of the kitchen of their dreams, but a great many have only a few vague ideas. In either case, our design team will work tirelessly with you to determine the perfect kitchen for your personal tastes.

What’s the “kitchen work triangle” and how does it impact the design process?

This refers to the distance between your fridge, your cooker and your kitchen sink. Ensuring an easy flow between these 3 stations is integral to the design process.

What’s the best kind of flooring to install?

It depends entirely on your tastes and budget. Hardwood can look great in kitchens but standing water can cause issues if left unattended. Floor tiles can look amazing but can be cracked or chipped in exceptional circumstances. Linoleum is great for those on a budget but can cheapen the overall effect. It depends where your priorities lie!

Am I better off with quartz or granite countertops?

Both are fine choices, although quartz countertops are sealed making them more durable and completely non-porous. This makes them virtually zero maintenance.

Can a gas stove be added to an all electric home?

Some customers find that nothing quite beats cooking with gas. If your home is all electric, however, the most efficient solution is to run your stove on calor or propane gas which is stored in an external tank.

Can I reuse my existing cabinets?

It’s not a legal requirement, but it is in your best interests. The hood extracts food odours as well as moisture from the cooking process. This helps to keep your kitchen fresh and clean.

Can I install dimmer lights in my new kitchen?

Can I Repair My Own Boiler?

If you consider yourself something of a handy person to have around the home, then you may be eager and willing to fix whatever you can yourself, without having to spend money on professional help. Some jobs are tougher than others, however, and boilers can be some of the most complex (and potentially dangerous) appliances in the home.

So, can you fix your own boiler? What can you do to make sure it’s taken care of and what should you do when something goes wrong with it?

Can I repair my own boiler?

One of the fears of the DIYer is that they might end up spending more money than they need to on services that they didn’t necessarily need. Unless you’re certified to work with boilers, however, it’s dangerous to go tinkering by yourself. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing that you can do.

One step that might see some minor hiccups cured and a good place to start is resetting the boiler. If you have the manual for your boiler, it should tell you where the reset button is. In most cases, you need to press this for ten seconds. If the problem isn’t fixed after two resets, there’s something more complex wrong with it.

Bleeding your radiator

If you have your boiler turned on and you can hear it working, but your radiators aren’t heating up, then there are two likely causes. The first is that there’s a build up of sludge inside the radiators, made from corroded materials, dirt, and other debris. In this case, you need a professional to flush it and there’s little you can do yourself.

Otherwise, there may be pockets of air trapped inside the water in the radiator, that make it hard for warm water to travel through them effectively enough to keep them heated. If that’s the case, then bleeding the radiator may be your best bet. It can hard to tell the difference as to whether to bleed or flush a radiator, so it’s always worth trying the former.

Turn off your heating and find the valve of the radiator. Holding the key with a cloth, turn it anti-clockwise. If you hear a hissing noise, then that means trapped gas is escaping. It’s wise to have a plastic tray or cup beneath the valve as water can drip out, as well. Once you can no longer hear hissing, tighten the valve by turning the key clockwise again.

Fixing your thermostat

If you have an electronic thermostat, then issues with heating in the home may not have anything to do with the boiler system, itself. Rather, the thermostat might be the issue. Often, dead or low batteries are the culprit. Find your thermostat manual, figure out what kind of batteries it uses and how you can access the battery compartment. If the problem isn’t fixed when you replace the batteries, you may need the help of a professional.

The dangers of boiler DIY

Boilers aren’t just full of hot water. They’re gas appliances. This means that a poor fitting or fix can be extremely dangerous. One of the most serious risks of all is an explosion due to a gas leak. Another danger to be wary of is carbon monoxide poisoning. CO is an invisible odourless gas that can kill if enough is inhaled. Trying to fix your own boiler isn’t just unsafe, it’s potentially deadly.

What to do when your boiler is in trouble

Given the risks associated with trying to do too much boiler repair on your own, it’s wise to err on the side of caution (and sense) and to call a professional when you need to repair your boiler. EICR regulations Regulations governing how landlords are required to maintain safe electrics across their properties changed on 1st June 2020. Landlords must now have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested by a person who is qualified and competent, at least every 5 years, and provide a copy of the electrical safety report to their tenants, and local authority if requested.

WeFIX launches summer home engineering competition

WeFIX Services Ltd is delighted to launch a summer home engineering competition aimed at secondary-school aged children in the London Borough of Richmond Upon-Thames. 11-18 year-olds are invited to submit home engineering projects to WeFIX, where a panel of senior staff members will select the top three entries on 10th September. Winners will receive Amazon gift vouchers, and an opportunity to spend a day shadowing some of WeFIX’s tradespeople.

To enter, competitors should email a description of a common household problem to, along with how they propose to resolve it, ideally with a video of their invention as well. Winners will be contacted by 17th September, and announced on WeFIX’s website and social media feeds, subject to parental consent.

How to Look After Your Home’s Plumbing?

For most of our customers, plumbing, water, and gas systems aren’t something they tend to give much thought to. These are simply parts of wherever they live, and if there are any problems then they call us to fix them. While we are happy to help our clients, we would also first advise them to take appropriate preventative measures to ensure that their plumbing remains in good working order. These are some basic ways to look after your home’s plumbing:

  • Only flush human waste and toilet paper down your toilet. Some toilets’ piping systems are surprisingly delicate, and can become blocked with relative ease. Quite simply, they are not designed to process leftover food, wet-wipes, or sanitary products. Inappropriately disposing of these products in toilets tends either cause blockages in your home, or damage local neighbourhood sewage systems
  • Use a strainer in your kitchen sink. This will catch debris and waste from tasks such as washing-up, and allow you to appropriately dispose of them in a bin. Kitchen sink pipes can easily become blocked by lumps of food waste that accumulate in them. This may cause foul smells and prevent proper drainage. Prevention is always better than cure with this
  • Avoid using harsh chemical products. Although these may be effective at clearing blockages, they can often degrade and eat away at piping and plumbing systems. This has a tendency to require expensive repairs further down the line, whereas calling out a plumber in the first instance would likely have been a better solution
  • Invest in a set of elbow-length rubber gloves! A surprising number of plumbing problems can be sorted without professional help, but squeamishness prevents action from being taken against them. Gloves should help give you the confidence to undertake tasks such as unblocking sinks rather than allowing waste to enter piping.

Electricity is so common that most of us will simply take it for granted. The fact that our appliances are powered by convenient electricity supplies has certainly changed our lives for the better, but how we use it should still be carefully considered. While modern appliances are usually safe, when abused, electricity can be dangerous and even lethal. Having said that, there are a number of straightforward ways to protect yourself and your family from potentially dangerous electrics:

  • Never handle wet electronics, or when your hands are wet. Water conducts electricity and combining the two increases your risk of suffering an electric shock or starting an electrical fire. Always ensure that your hands are dry before handling electrics, and never use electronics in the bathroom unless marked as safe to do so
  • Book annual PAT tests for your electrical appliances. This is a quick procedure where an electrician will determine their fitness for purpose and determine whether or not they are safe to use. Although most faults can be found visually, PAT testing identifies invisible ones and can give important advance notice on when products may no longer be safe
  • Never overload an extension lead by plugging in appliances that together will exceed the maximum current rating stated for the extension lead. This may cause an electric fire or explosion. Space for six plugs does not mean that it is safe or sensible to use all of them, and it is worth using an overload calculator. These are commonly available online
  • In the event of an electrical fire breaking out, never attempt to extinguish it with water. As water conducts electricity, this is actually the most dangerous response possible. If it safe to do so, disconnect the fire’s source of electricity, and only attempt to use an extinguisher certified for electrical fire usage

How do I Become a Plumber?

Technical trades have become increasingly popular career choices among young people in recent years. With demand for skilled tradespeople greater than supply, the technical trades offer exciting and fulfilling careers. We are often asked how to become a plumber, and this blog will offer some guidelines on we recommend individuals achieve this.

An informal way of entering plumbing is to work as a “plumber’s mate”. In many ways, you will be acting as a qualified plumber’s junior and supporting them in their work. Although this route allows you to start working immediately, you will not attain any formal qualifications, and are unlikely to fully realise your earning potential. It is also likely that potential clients will prefer to have work undertaken by a qualified tradesperson.

More traditionally, aspiring plumbers undertake a formal apprenticeship. As an apprentice, you will work for a company – usually for four years – interspersing your time with study periods. While a significant commitment, apprenticeships lead to years of work experience and recognised qualifications, all without incurring any debt. However, fewer and fewer companies are in a position to take on apprentice plumbers, WeFIX being one of those that do.

Another alternative is a fast-track City and Guilds Accredited Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies. This qualification takes 8-10 weeks, but does not offer any of the practical experience apprentices gain. Students are also required to pay for it themselves and only study theoretical basics, but are put in good stead for later career upscaling.
